I've been a fan of post-apocalyptic stories since I found a copy of "Earth Abides" at a library used book sale. Like the classic satires and commentaries on civilization ("Utopia," "Erewhon," "Gulliver's Travels," for example), the genre permits an author to create a world that in itself is a reflection of and commentary on our civilization. It is a difficult genre, because the world created must be a logical extension of at least key elements of our civilization while being a new and fresh approach to the reconstruction (or deconstruction) of that civilization. Arthur created that world in the first book, and I quickly immersed myself in it. The second book is proving to be equally exciting and complex.
