Hoard of the Dragon Queen Episode 0: Journey to Greenest

Erwin:

"Goblins I'll try to outrun," Erwin sayed grimly.  "Orcs, half-ogres and wolves?  Tymora is not smiling on us.  We could try for stealth, but I doubt that's going to work."

"Stop the  wagons," he ordered.  "Quietly."

He hopped down and paced back and forth a moment before sighing.  "Only one option.  Well, two really.  We can't run past, we can't sneak past, we can't stay hiding until they move on.  That leaves attack, or retreat."

Erwin tested the fit of his sword in it's scabbard, then turned to face the caravan master.  "Prepare the caravan for general retreat.  We'll try to clear you a path, but if we fail..."  Erwin left the rest of the sentence unstated.

"Perrin, Arjhan, Morganor, Garanth, on me," he turned to face the voices.  "Time to earn our princely salaries.  Quietly, though, quietly."

Arjan:

Arjan fell silently behind Erwin.  He understood exactly what Erwin was thinking.  Didn't really change Arjan's intense desire to run the bloody hell away, but...

A promise was a promise, and he'd given his word.  After living so long on the streets, in many ways his word was all he had left.

Perrin:

Perrin understood exactly what Erwin was thinking, but for the life of him he couldn't come up with a better option.  What was more, even a full-bore retreat probably wouldn't save the caravan, whereas a failed assault might -- might -- buy it the time it needed.

Funny.  All those assassins and bounty hunters didn't manage to do him in, and now simple caravan escort duty might finish off their work for them.  At least this way, they wouldn't get paid...

{{

Group stealth check, please!

Arjan: 6

Erwin: 3

Perrin: 20

Morganor mentally prepares to use Burning Hands or Sacred Flame, loosens his war hammer and falls in with the others.

Garanth walks up to Erwin, "Will there be a chance for ranged attacks?" {Depending on answer Garanth either readies his bow or his sword.} Ready he moves to the opposite side of Erwin from Morganor.

Stealth checks for both of these please.

Erwin:

"Garanth, you and I should form the front line," Erwin ordered. "I want Perrin and Arjan in the rear. Perrin, try to hit them with a faerie fire, and be ready for some combat healing or a well timed sleep, your call. Arjan, if you can manage another one of those ice spells it'd be nice, and if you find a good clump feel free to use your breath attack. Morganor, if you have a bless spell now would be a great time to cast it on me and Garanth, then hold the rest of your spells in reserve for the fight. See if you can find a good target for burning hands. And if you don't have bless, feel free to find some other buff. I want you in the back so you can keep that buff going, and so you can provide a good combat rez."

Morganor switched mental gears and nodded. "I can add Perrin to that bless too if you want." Morganor uses the Bless spell on Erwin, Garanth (and Perrin)?

Garanth takes the one step necessary to put him beside Erwin.

{{ OOC:  Both Perrin and Arjan will be using their disadvantage imposing cantrips, which are save based spells.  Arjan may fire off a single ice knife, but he could just as likely throw a sleep spell if he sees a good target.  Morganor, on the other hand, may well be called into the melee line or targeted by a 'save or suck' spell that would disrupt bless.  So... }}

"Add yourself," Erwin instructed.  "I'd rather you stay in the back so you don't get distracted from maintaining the spell, but if you have to move to the front we'll all be thankful for the extra oomph."

Morganor sprinkles holy water over himself, Erwin, and Garanth as the group attempts to sneak closer.  The heavy armor worn by Erwin and Morganor made the job that much harder, but the clanks made by their armor appear to remain undetected... for now.

Perrin scouts ahead, espying an opening in the brush ahead.  What he saw almost made him wet his pants!

A few yards ahead, an orc was arguing very loudly with a bugbear.  Flanking the orc were two more orcs, and a half-ogre that looks distinctly uninterested at the proceedings.  The bugbear was supported by a grey wolf, with eight goblins behind him jeering at the orcs.

Although Perrin does not understand a word they are saying, the creatures look to be on edge, with hands already straying towards their sheathed weapons.  In fact, both groups appear to be very close to coming into blows.

Erwin:

Erwin hissed when Perrin described the scene ahead.  "Well, Tymora isn't exactly smiling at us, but at least she isn't scowling, either," he said quietely.  "Sneak forward, and stand by.  Once a fight breaks out, focus fire on the half-ogre until it goes down, then the bugbear.  Perrin, throw faerie fire at them just to really mess with their day."

"We stay under cover and out of sight until they start moving our way.  The second they do, I'll step out of cover and try to taunt them into attacking me.  When they do... hopefully they'll clump up around me and be a perfect target.  Morganor, Arjan, that's when I want you to flame them."

"There are too effin' many of these bastards," Erwin finished, "so don't hold anything back.  Deal with them harshly."

As Erwin quietly gives his instructions, the bugbear gives the orc a forceful shove, takes out a morningstar, and brutally whacks the creature.  It gives a roar in goblin (Erwin: "NO ONE TELL KING KLARG WHAT TO DO!  ATTACK!"), and all hell breaks loose.

The gravely-wounded orc picks himself up, draws his greataxe, and prepares to charge when Erwin's shiny armor catches his attention.  He peers into the brush, and locks eyes with the fighter.

"Human!" the orc roars.  "Help us deal with these insects, and you will have our thanks!"

Klarg is wide-eyed at this proclamation.  He, too, searches out the human and calls out as well.  "Human!  Obey King Klarg and kill these orcs, and we will let you pass!"

Erwin and Perrin have been placed.  Everyone else, place yourself! :)

Erwin:

"Why do things never go as planned?" Erwin complained even as he made a snap decision, moving forward to take advantage of the orc's momentary hesitation.  "Proceed as planned and take down those orcs!"

{{ Bonus Action: Shove Prone (Probably a success at 8 + 5 vs 4 + ?) }}

{{ Action: Attack, to-hit at advantage for a crit, dealing 12 damage }}

Perrin:

Perrin grinned and dropped faerie fire on the orcs.

{{ Action: faerie fire the orcish side... and any poor goblins who 'just happen' to be in the area of effect. }}

Arjan:

Arjan surveyed the forces arrayed against them and decided to hold his last full spell in reserve for the moment.  Raising his hands, he called a momentary burst of cold air into being around the half-ogre.

{{ Action: Frost-bite for 6 damage  & probably failed save  (2 + ? < 13 )}}

GOBLIN 4

GOBLIN 1

Morganor fires off a Sacred Flame against the Half-Ogre, but the creature proved to be more agile than expected, easily dodging the flames.

The final orc charges towards the goblin group with its greataxe, and easily decapitates one of them.

Perrin mutters an arcane phrase calling for fey spirit lighting - a dim glow envelopes the orcish side, splashing all of them with the fire.

The illumination allows all remaining goblins to concentrate their fire - and easily hit the orc that killed one of their kind, and reducing it to its knees.

Klarg's pet wolf charges the half-ogre with a snarl, but the giant brushed aside its jaws.  It tries to chop the wolf in half with its battleaxe, but the wolf dodges as well.

Arjan's spell chills the half-ogre to its bone.  The half-ogre glares at him.  "You next." It smirks at him, tapping its axe and pointing to the dragonborn's head.

Erwin, cursing at his lack of a ranged option, moves forward and reaches the corpse of the recently-killed orc.  It has a crudely-made goblin javelin sticking out of its body, as well as several arrows.

Klarg is hit by the full force of the Command spell, and sinks to his knees.  The orc conjures up a spear, which jabs the bugbear mercilessly.  Klarg coughs up blood, badly hurt by the attack.

The orc's voice booms three times louder than normal, as it issues a warning.  "Witness the power of Gruumsh and tremble!" the scarred orc intones.  "See how the so-called King Klarg grovels!  Surrender now, and Gruumsh may yet show mercy!"

Although the goblins do not surrender, they are clearly unnerved by this display of power.  If Klarg were to die, they would likely flee.

Perrin:

"You can grovel down and spit shine my head, you silly orc!  I'm no fool that hasn't seen magic before!" Perrin taunts the spellcasting orc.  {{ Vicious Mockery -- not going to roll since apparently you aren't counting them for save roles }}

Arjan:

Arjan laughs at the rather crude taunt, and throws another spell of elemental ice at the half-ogre.  {{ Spell: Frostbite }}

Erwin:

His target identified, Erwin charges the spellcaster with his preferred sword & board technique.  {{ Am I in range, or will this wind up being another dash? }}

Morganor hopes it's injuries have slowed it down and tries again to hit the half-ogre with a Sacred Flame cantrip holding back his last spell slot until absolute need.

Garanth again fires an arrow with his longbow at the half-ogre.    {{OOC: BTW while you rolled for Garanth's last attack you didn't write about it in your post. :) }}

Orc 2 vs. Yeemik (ATK 1): [1d20+6] = 18+6 = 24. On hit, 10 + [1d12] = 4 on crit.. HIT!  Yeemik uses reaction to Swap places with Goblin 4; goblin 4 dies.

GOBLIN 1

Morganor flings another Sacred Flame at the frost-bitten half-ogre - but the creature dodges out of the way by sheer luck.  Perrin's shouts an insult at the spelcaster, but the orc appears to have a face as thick as its skin.

The remaining orc with the greataxe steps forward into the swarm of goblins around it, and swings at the goblin leader!  Yeemik quickly redirects the first attack against a hapless goblin, but was badly injured by the rebound swing!  All remaining goblins retaliate by unloading into the orc.  Although the majority miss, the creature is eventually put out of its misery by a lucky shortbow shot.

Meanwhile, the Half-Ogre continues its struggle with Klarg and its wolf.  Garanth wounds it some more, and the wolf bites a chunk out of its face.  Klarg, suitably humiliated, lets out a bellow, and swings its morningstar at the ogre, but the creature's thick skin protects it from further injury.

Erwin charges at the orc spellcaster, knocking it prone and wounding it slightly.  The orc ignores him, intent on finishing the bugbear off with its spiritual weapon.  Alas, the half-ogre is in the way.

Seeing the tides of battle turn against it, the orc picks itself up, and attempts to flee!  "We will remember this!" it shouts at Klarg after giving a particularly nasty look at the human.

Erwin (Out of order free action):

"Arjan!  Morganor!  Forward the flame!  Take these fools down!" Erwin shouted out, seeing the orc retreat

Arjan:

Arjan grinned, seeing the inevitable yet surprising double-cross about to go down.  He moved forward while calling down more frost down on the enemy.

{{ Action: Frostbite either the ogre if still up, probable save at 11 + 2, or dash forward to put in good flaming range of goblins }}

Perrin:

"Don't you dare run off on us!" Perrin shouted.  "Take a nap, instead!"

{{ Action: sleep spell, Positioned to catch the remaining orc, the wolf, and the half-ogre inside.}}

"And go, go mighty Erwin!" Perrin added mirthfully.

{{ Go-go mighty bardic inspiration! }}

Erwin:

Erwin charged forward, sheathing his sword, and grabs at the fleeing orc, only to find the creature slipping through his grasp.

{{ Action: Grapple, almost certain fail... unless I can grapple at advantage since the thing is faeirie fired? }}

MORGANOR
> Move closer (dash)

PERRIN

> Bardic Inspiration to Erwin

GOBLIN 3

Perrin weaves a melodic lullaby, and flings the spell towards the Half-Ogre, bugbear, and wolf.  Almost immediately, Klarg's eyes drop, and he crumples to the ground.  After a moment, the giant collapses as well.

The goblins look at each other, and Yeemik gives them a little nod.  Without warning, one of the goblins fire off an arrow at Morganor!  Thankfully, the arrow bounces off his shield.

Erwin:

The bugbear looked nice and vulnerable right now.  Erwin took an opportunity to take a good solid swing at him, but was distracted as an arrow flew past his nose.

{{ Action:  Attack!  Probable miss, since I don't think even a bless roll of 4 (not included) would get me to the 'hit' range.  Can I use bardic inspiration to bring it up?  That 10 damage looks cool! }}

Arjan:

Arjan walked forward and threw off another frostbite.

Perrin:

Perrin also charged forward, throwing a stream of insults at one of the goblins.

MORGANOR

The arrow that ricocheted off Morganor sticks in the tree Garanth was standing right next to.  The elf fighter swears at the backstabbing goblins, and stepping forward to get a straight line of fire, looses his own arrow at the little bastard.  Unfortunately, he misses due to his anger, and was even rewarded by an arrow to his side thanks to one of the quick-acting goblins!

The wolf, unsurprisingly, capitalizes on the Half-Ogre's stupor, and tears out of the creature's nose.  The half-ogre awakens in a rage.  It grabs hold of the sleeping bugbear, and throws him at Perrin!  Luckily, the Half-Elf dodges out of the way just in time!  Klarg was not so fortunate; his head impacts the tree, and his skull splits open.

Meanwhile, Arjan and Morganor team up on a one-two punch, freezing and burning the half-ogre at the same time.  The strategy is super effective, and anyone could tell the creature was standing on its last legs.  Erwin quickly dispatches it with a mercy killing stroke.

As Perrin steps forward, three goblins raise their shortbows to fire at Perrin, but Yeemik holds up a hand.  "Humans," it breathes out heavily in Common, "Klarg is dead. We no fights you. Helps kills Klarg wolf, and we will let you pass!"

DM Notes: It is now your turn!  I thought I'd stop the action right before Perrin acts.
